Group Fitness Philosophy:

My fitness journey started over 25 years ago.  I loved working out and loved fitness classes.  The gym I was attending at the time had no fitness classes and they suggested that I start teaching one.  So I started out with an old school step class and the rest is history.  I subsequently obtained certifications in personal training, group fitness, yoga and Les Mills classes.  I have found that I am much more likely to stick to a workout program if I do that with other people.  Partly it’s because I want to be the one who is always there to keep us moving but it’s a lot more about feeling like I’m working out with my friends.  Because that’s exactly how I feel about the people in my classes – they are friends that I care about and who I want to have just the best experience!  Nothing can beat the feeling of having a great workout and feeling those muscles and I love to share that experience.  I am a patent paralegal in my regular job which means that I sit a lot.  So working out has become even more important as I’ve gotten older.

Hobbies and interests:

I love to feed all of the wildlife around our home in the woods, read (particularly apocalyptic stories), and spend time with my French bulldog, Zoe, and cat, Bimmer (both named after cars – my husband is a car guy).

Julie Umstead

Group Fitness Philosophy

Hi, I’m Julie! I’ve been teaching Les Mills Body Balance since 2019 and completed my 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification through the Yoga and Ayurveda Center. Over the years, I’ve discovered that combining breath with movement can be truly life-changing, and I love encouraging others to honor themselves wherever they are on their fitness and yoga journey.

Hobbies and Interests

Outside of yoga, I work as an accounting assistant and office manager for E&E Commercial Contracting. When I’m not teaching or working, you’ll most likely find me spending time with my husband and three kids, camping, relaxing at the beach, reading, or baking sourdough bread.

Yoga and mindful movement have brought so much balance and joy into my life, and I’m passionate about helping others find that same connection between body, mind, and breath.

Emily Ptak

Group Fitness Philosophy

Hi, I’m Emily! I’ve been teaching Les Mills Body Balance since 2018, but my love for yoga and mindful movement started way back in college. Before becoming an instructor, I took Body Balance classes for three years and fell in love with how they made me feel — strong, calm, and centered.  I believe fitness should be personal — it’s about finding what moves you. To me, movement and breathing are the foundation of both physical and mental well-being.

Hobbies and Interests

When I’m not in the studio, I work full-time as a pediatric physical therapist and stay busy as a mom to two awesome boys, ages 12 and 14.  Outside of work and classes, you’ll usually find me outdoors with my family, camping, hiking, or planning our next adventure together!

Outside of teaching, I enjoy being active with my three sons, ages 18,16, and 13. I also love watching my boys play organized sports—baseball and basketball and loves cheering them on! Group Fitness Philosophy

My passion for fitness and helping others to live a healthier lifestyle started back in middle school. Little did I know that leading aerobic classes for my friends and encouraging teammates to do summer workouts with me would eventually lead me to a career in the fitness industry. Strength and cardio training is a ‘hobby’ for me which I am aware this is not the norm for a lot of people.  As a Group Fitness instructor, I want to create a class that is fun, but challenging, and provide modifications to meet the needs of every fitness level.  It’s a joy celebrating members’ successes and being their biggest cheerleaders on their journey to overall better health.

Hobbies and interests:

Exercising, going to the beach with family, going out to dinner with friends, and walking my dog.
